PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) has carried out various actions\nto preserve marine and coastal ecosystems through greening efforts. In\nthe past year, the planting of 70,000 mangrove trees and 2,000 coral\nreef seedlings, the release of 1,000 hatchlings into their natural\nhabitat, and beach clean-up activities have been undertaken by PNM,\ninvolving various elements of the community.<\/p>\n
PNM President Director Kindaris stated that the effort to protect the\nenvironment is part of PNM\u2019s bid to deliver a better future for the next\ngeneration. \u201cA better life for children is built not only through\neducation, health, and economic empowerment, but also through a\nsustainable environment,\u201d he said. Kindaris acknowledged that for many people, planting mangroves,\nreleasing hatchlings, or cleaning beaches is often viewed as a symbolic\nenvironmental activity. In fact, the greatest benefits of these efforts\nare often not immediately visible. Behind every seedling planted and\nevery piece of rubbish collected from the coast lies a long-term\ninvestment in the continuity of community life, especially for future\ngenerations.<\/p>\n
The move is not merely a form of environmental concern. More than\nthat, PNM wants to ensure that the natural resources underpinning the\nlives of coastal communities remain preserved. A healthy ocean is not\nonly a home for various marine life, but also a source of food, a source\nof livelihood, and a natural fortress protecting coastal areas from\nvarious threats.<\/p>\n
One of the rarely noticed benefits of mangroves is their ability to\nserve as a growing space for various types of fish, shrimp, and crabs\nthat are a source of income for fishermen. Likewise, coral reefs are\noften called the rainforests of the sea. When coral reefs are protected,\nthe marine food chain continues to run, fish stocks remain available,\nand the welfare of coastal communities can continue.<\/p>\n
The release of 1,000 turtle hatchlings also carries equally important\nmeaning. Turtles are an indicator of the health of the marine ecosystem.\nTheir presence helps maintain the balance of the food chain and the\nseagrass and coral reef ecosystems.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the beach clean-up actions have an impact that goes far\nbeyond the cleanliness of tourist areas. Plastic waste left on the coast\ncan break down into microplastics and enter the marine food chain,\npotentially returning to people\u2019s dining tables through the fish and\nseafood consumed.<\/p>\n
Through these various initiatives, PNM wants to affirm that\nempowerment is not only about enhancing human capacity, but also about\nprotecting the ecosystems that sustain their lives.
