Plutonium shipment rebuked<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Environmental Forum (WALHI)
\ndemanded yesterday the government close Indonesian territorial
\nwaters to this month's shipment of plutonium from France to
\nJapan.<\/p>\n
WALHI said in a statement that the 14 tons of highly
\nradioactive plutonium waste contained in 28 canisters will be
\ncarried to Japan by a British container.<\/p>\n
Indonesia should close its territorial waters to the passage
\nof the ships carrying plutonium because even a very small
\nquantity of the substance will cause a catastrophe if an accident
\nhappens, WALHI said.<\/p>\n
\"They have assured us that the waste will be properly handled,
\nbut remember that accidents can cause disaster,\" a statement made
\navailable to The Jakarta Post read.<\/p>\n
The route to be taken by the ship has been kept a secret but
\nWALHI predicts that the narrow but busy Malacca Strait and the
\nLombok Strait are the probable seaways.<\/p>\n
In 1992, a shipment of plutonium from France to Japan provoked
\ninternational protests as many countries closed their territorial
\nwaters to the Akatsuki Maru which carried 1.7 tons of plutonium.
