Plot to kill Kumaratunga uncovered<\/p>\n
COLOMBO (Reuter): Sri Lankan police have arrested a senior
\nTamil Tiger rebel suicide squad member planning to assassinate
\nPresident Chandrika Kumaratunga, the state-owned Sunday Observer
\nnewspaper reported.<\/p>\n
The 26-year-old suspect, Anthonypillai Nesarajah, also known
\nas Major Rahu Appa, had videotaped Temple Trees, Kumaratunga's
\nofficial residence, from a high-rise building in the capital
\nColombo, the paper said.<\/p>\n
He had also revealed plans to attack helicopters used to
\ntransport senior government officials, it said.<\/p>\n
A military spokesman said he had no information on the report.<\/p>\n
A Tamil Tiger spokesman in London, Anton Rajah, said he had no
\ninformation on the report but said the government has arrested
\ninnocent Tamil civilians and then falsely claimed they were
\nmembers of the rebel group.<\/p>\n
Government officials have said Kumaratunga is planning to move
\nfrom her heavily guarded residence in the heart of Colombo to a
\nmore secure location in the suburbs.<\/p>\n
Kumaratunga's Temple Trees residence is protected by radar,
\nanti-aircraft guns and bunkers. Several roads in the
\nneighborhood have been closed to traffic.<\/p>\n
Tamil Tiger rebels are believed to have acquired microlight
\naircraft for suicide attacks on targets like government leaders,
\nmilitary officials said.<\/p>\n
Nesarajah has also claimed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil
\nEelam (LTTE) rebels were holding nearly 100 Sri Lankan military
\nofficials and Indian intelligence agents at a secret bunker in
\nnorthwestern Mannar, the paper said.<\/p>\n
It did not say if any of the detainees were Indian nationals.<\/p>\n
LTTE rebels are fighting for an independent homeland for
\nminority Tamils in the north and east of the island. The
\ncountry's majority people are Sinhalese.<\/p>",
