State electricity company PT PLN (Persero) has launched the Merdeka
Daya Programme, offering a 50 percent discount on power capacity upgrade
fees for low-voltage single-phase household customers with initial
capacities ranging from 450 VA to 5,500 VA. The programme runs from 17
to 25 August 2026, with upgrade options up to 7,700 VA.

Chairman of the National Electricity Consumer Protection Association
(Alperklinas), Tohom Purba, said the discounted power upgrade programme
during the 81st Independence Day celebrations has provided direct
benefits to the public while bringing the spirit of independence closer
to people’s needs. According to him, the spirit of independence is not
merely about ceremony, but about how people feel its benefits in daily
life.

“Ease of access to electricity services at a lighter cost is
certainly something close to the people’s needs,” Tohom said in a
statement on Tuesday, 18 August 2026.

Tohom said the reduced upgrade fees can help customers adjust their
electricity capacity to meet household needs as well as productive
activities. These needs are increasing along with the growing use of
electrical appliances at home and business activities requiring greater
power.

Under the Merdeka Daya Programme, customers with an initial capacity
of 450 VA upgrading to 900 VA need only pay Rp 210,825, down from the
normal fee of Rp 421,650. Meanwhile, customers with 5,500 VA upgrading
to 7,700 VA pay Rp 1,065,900, down from the normal fee of Rp
2,131,800.

“For consumers, a power upgrade is not just about VA figures. It
relates to comfort and the ability to use electrical appliances
according to need. When the cost is made lighter, it certainly provides
added value for the public,” Tohom said.

Tohom added that the programme’s benefits extend beyond household
comfort. Easier access to appropriate electricity capacity can also
support people running businesses or productive activities from
home.

“If people can obtain electricity services according to their needs
at a more affordable cost, the benefits are not only felt at home but
can also support productivity and economic activity,” he said.

From a consumer protection perspective, Tohom stressed the importance
of transparent communication of the programme’s information, including
requirements, application mechanisms, programme period, and the fees
customers must pay.
",
