PLN will decide private partners in April: Zuhal<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The State Electricity Company (PT PLN) is in
\nthe last stage to select partners in the establishment of
\nsubsidiaries which will be privatized this year, its president
\nsays.<\/p>\n
Zuhal told reporters here yesterday that the partners will
\nbe selected out of the 40 domestic and foreign companies which
\nhave applied for cooperation with PLN.<\/p>\n
\"We will announce the results in April,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Zuhal declined to elaborate how many partners PLN is seeking
\nin the company's restructuring program.<\/p>\n
He also said that PLN still has not decided how many
\nsubsidiaries it wants to establish. \"It could be three, four or
\neven six subsidiaries. The important thing is that all of them
\nwill offer their shares to the public later this year,\" he said.<\/p>\n
PLN became a limited company last year.<\/p>\n
The executive also said that PLN will delineate two roles
\nfor the coming partners. They will become either \"joint-venture
\npartners\" or \"strategic allies\", he said.<\/p>\n
\"At the current stage, I can only say that PLN needs joint-
\nventure partners to operate its new facilities and it requires
\nstrategic allies for the operation of its existing facilities,\"
\nZuhal said.<\/p>\n
He declined to elaborate on the possible stakes for the
\npartners.<\/p>\n
Zuhal said last September that PLN was to set up two
\nsubsidiaries comprised of PT Pembangkit Jawa Bagian Barat, which
\nwill be responsible for the operation of PLN's power plants in
\nWest and Central Java, and PT Pembangkit Jawa Bagian Timur, which
\nwill control the operation of power stations in East Java and
\nBali.<\/p>\n
He also said that at the time, four power corporations had
\napplied as partners in the planned subsidiaries. The four firms
\nwere National Power Corp of Britain, EDF Power Corp. of France
\nand two unnamed firms of the United States.<\/p>\n
Zuhal also stated that PLN will also consider overseas
\nlisting for the privatization plan.<\/p>\n
PLN currently operates power plants with a total capacity of
\n12,000 megawatts (MW) and 11,000 kilometer transmission networks.
\nIt plans to set up more power plants with a combined capacity of
\n13,000 MW in the coming five years. (hdj)<\/p>",
