PLN, Pertamina to build geothermal power plant<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The state-owned electric company PLN and the
\nstate-owned oil firm Pertamina will set up a joint venture to
\nbuild and operate a geothermal power station.<\/p>\n
A spokesman for the Ministry of Mines and Energy, P. Sopacua,
\nin correcting a story which appeared in The Jakarta Post's April
\n20 edition, said that the planned joint venture will not be
\nestablished by state-owned tin mining company PT Tambang Timah
\nand state-owned general mining company PT Aneka Tambang.<\/p>\n
An official at the ministry said that the two mining firms
\nwill instead set up a joint venture for gold mining and
\nexploration in Kalimantan.<\/p>\n
Secretary-general of the Ministry of Mines and Energy Umar
\nSaid said that Aneka Tambang and Tambang Timah have already signed
\na memorandum of understanding on the gold project, whose interest
\nwill be equally owned by the two firms.<\/p>\n
Umar said that PLN and Pertamina have yet to discuss the
\ndetails of the power project which they will establish.
\nHe noted that the joint venture will be called PT Geothermal
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
According to official data, Indonesia's potential geothermal
\nenergy reserves will be able to support the operation of power
\nplants which will have a total capacity of 19,658 megawatts.
\nUntil now, only about 1,000 megawatts of capacity have been
\nutilized.<\/p>\n
He pointed out that the two planned joint ventures are to be
\nestablished under the so-called \"cross fertilization\" scheme,
\nwhich calls for cooperation between state-owned enterprises or
\nbetween state-owned enterprises and private firms.<\/p>\n
\"In the near future, we'll see more such business cooperation
\nestablished in order to improve the efficiency of the state-owned
\ncompanies,\" he said. (13)<\/p>",
