        "content": "<p>PT PLN Energi Primer Indonesia (PLN EPI) is targeting the development\nof Bio-Compressed Natural Gas (Bio-CNG) from palm oil waste this year\nthrough cooperation contracts as part of green energy diversification.\nPLN EPI Biomass Director Hokkop Situngkir stated after attending a\ndissemination event on biomethane development in Medan, North Sumatra,\nthat the company is investing in partnerships with palm oil plantation\nconcession holders. He explained that waste such as Palm Oil Mill\nEffluent (POME) would be processed jointly to produce biomethane, which\ncan then be converted into Bio-CNG for power generation. Hokkop said the\ncompany is currently engaging hundreds of palm oil mills in North\nSumatra, having already secured a technology partner and clean energy\ntransition financing. He expressed hope for a positive reception from\nthe numerous palm oil mill operators in the province. PLN EPI has\nalready established cooperation with PT KIS Biofuels Indonesia, a\npioneer developer of renewable energy technology that converts palm oil\nwaste into Bio-CNG. The firm has been independently processing\ndark-coloured liquid palm oil waste containing organic compounds which,\nif left untreated, can turn into methane gas. Hokkop noted that this\nparticular cooperation does not yet include the palm oil mills\nthemselves, despite North Sumatra\u2019s immense potential, and that\npartnerships with mills there are the expected outcome following the\ndissemination event. According to 2023 data from the national statistics\nagency BPS, there are 327 palm oil plantation companies operating in\nNorth Sumatra, including 237 palm oil mills with processing facilities.\nMeanwhile, the Indonesian government is pursuing national energy\nindependence through renewable energy instruments in response to\nuncertain global geopolitical conditions. Special Presidential Envoy for\nClimate and Energy Hashim Djojohadikusumo stated in Samarinda, East\nKalimantan, that the increasingly complicated geopolitical situation due\nto the war involving Iran, Israel and the United States is affecting the\nfulfilment of the country\u2019s energy needs.
