Players must beat inferiority, says Kolev<\/p>\n

Indonesian players suffer an inferiority syndrome when faced
\nagainst strong international teams, according to national team
\ncoach Ivan Venkov Kolev.<\/p>\n
\"Therefore, the squad must work it out and find some courage
\nif they want to pose a tough challenge during the 2006 World Cup
\nAsian qualification round,\" Kolev told reporters here on Tuesday
\nthrough an interpreter.<\/p>\n
Kolev of Bulgaria said he was puzzled by the national players'
\nbehavior at several international matches.<\/p>\n
He said that when the players lost the ball, they would just
\ngive up, retreating to their goal area. That's a bad habit, which
\nwill allow opponents to snatch control of the space and become
\ndangerous with goal attempts.<\/p>\n
\"When I ask them, why do they keep doing that, they are just
\nclueless,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Therefore, he said, for the coming World Cup qualifying
\nmatches he had called up players who he believed would likely
\nhave the courage to stand up against their more famous opponents.<\/p>\n
\"In Bulgaria, we would send players with such inferiority
\ncomplexes to the zoo to have a stare down contest with a lion,\"
\nhe said jokingly, but emphasized that eventually the national
\nplayers had to learn how to be men.<\/p>\n
Kolev announced a number of players shortlisted for the
\nnational training center. The hopefuls, who will start their
\ntraining on Sunday, include three goalkeepers, nine defenders,
\nfive midfielders and three strikers.<\/p>\n
Kolev said he had recruited so many defenders because the
\nnational team traditionally had a problem in defense.<\/p>\n
The players have been recruited based on their performance in
\nthe recent Southeast Asian Games and the local pro league.<\/p>\n
The opponents' expected style of play style in the
\nqualification rounds have also weighed on the choices.<\/p>\n
Indonesia is drawn against Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan and Sri
\nLanka. The first away match is scheduled against Saudi Arabia on
\nFeb. 18.<\/p>\n
Kolev said that the team would not adopt a play format with
\njust one taking the role as a playmaker, because he wants
\neveryone with the ball to know how to maneuver within their
\nrespective role and be a playmaker.<\/p>\n
\"It doesn't matter whether we use a 4-4-2 or 3-5-2 format.
\nWhat matters is how the squad members understand their respective
\ntasks on the field,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Persija Jakarta dominates the nominee list with six players.
\nPersikota Tangerang and Persebaya Surabaya have four each. PSIS
\nSemarang and Persik Kediri contribute two each while Persipura
\nJayapura, PSM Makassar and first division Arema Malang have one
\neach.<\/p>\n
A number of old names have been included on the list. Among
\nthem are Hendro Kartiko, Warsidi, Bejo Sugiantoro, Aples Tecuari,
\nEduard Ivak Dalam, Uston Nawawi, Bambang Pamungkas and Kurniawan
\nDwi Julianto.<\/p>\n
Kolev has also prepared a list of reserve players, one from
\nthe Under-20 team Boaz Salossa and the other is Persikota star
\nAliyudin.<\/p>\n
