        "content": "<p>Mechanical and Biosystems Engineering lecturer at IPB University,\nLeopold Oscar, has stated that scientifically, plastic waste can be\nprocessed into liquid fuel through pyrolysis technology. Pyrolysis is a\nthermochemical decomposition process of material at high temperatures\nunder conditions of minimal or no oxygen. In this process, plastic is\nbroken down into various products including gas, liquid, and solid\nresidue. The liquid product produced has the potential to be developed\ninto fuel, although it still requires further processing stages. He\nexplained that plastics such as polyethylene and polypropylene tend to\nproduce hydrocarbon compounds that are more suitable for fuel.\nConversely, other types of plastic like polyethylene terephthalate and\npolyvinyl chloride produce other compounds that are corrosive or\npotentially cause environmental problems, making them less ideal for\nfuel potential. Besides the type of plastic, product quality is also\ndetermined by various process factors, such as operating temperature,\nheating, use of catalysts, and raw material pre-treatment stages.\nTherefore, Dr Leopold explained, pyrolysis oil cannot yet be directly\nused as commercial diesel. The product must still go through\npurification, distillation, or cracking processes to meet diesel fuel\nquality standards. From an environmental perspective, utilising plastic\nwaste into fuel can be an alternative to reduce the accumulation of\nwaste that is difficult to decompose. This approach is also in line with\nthe circular economy concept as it provides added value to previously\nunutilised waste. However, Dr Leopold stressed that this technology\nneeds to be viewed comprehensively. The main challenges currently are\nincreasing process efficiency, ensuring economic viability, and\nguaranteeing that operations are safe for the environment. In the\nfuture, the utilisation of plastic waste into fuel has significant\npotential to solve waste management solutions, especially as long as\nenergy needs still depend on fossil resources. However, because plastic\npyrolysis products can also be used for non-fuel purposes, their role\nneeds to be continuously evaluated as the use of renewable energy\ndevelops in Indonesia.<\/p>",
