Plastic raw material prices in Central Java have skyrocketed by 300% at local suppliers, posing a significant threat to small and medium enterprises (UMKM), yet the provincial Industry and Trade Office (Disperindag) reports no formal complaints from affected businesses or residents. Officials note that companies are absorbing the cost increases through internal efficiencies and existing stockpiles, preventing immediate price hikes on end products. The potential shift to locally sourced bioplastics from cassava starch is deemed unviable, as it could raise production costs by 1.5 to two times, potentially increasing sales prices by up to 20%.

The Head of the Industry and Trade Office (Disperindag) of Central
Java Province, July Emmylia, revealed that plastic prices have risen by
300% at local suppliers. However, she stated that companies have not yet
increased their product prices. Disperindag Jateng’s July also claimed
that no residents have reported to Disperindag Jateng regarding the
price increase of plastic products.

“Plastic is indeed imported raw material. There has been an increase
of up to 300% at local suppliers,” said July when contacted on Tuesday
(7/4/2026).

However, July claimed that companies are currently not raising
plastic product prices. “Companies are still able to suppress prices, so
they haven’t increased them. How? Through internal savings,” she
said.

July stated that this information was obtained after checking with
three local suppliers in Indonesia. Additionally, July added that the
companies’ decision not to raise plastic product prices is also because
they still have stocks of raw materials.

According to July, so far Disperindag Jateng has not received reports
from residents about the price increase of plastic products. “We have
complaint channels, but no one has complained,” she said.

She revealed that Indonesia actually has bioplastic raw materials
derived from cassava starch. “In our calculations, using bioplastics
based on cassava starch would actually be 1.5 to two times more
expensive. So it would be higher for production cost burden,” she
said.

According to July, the use of bioplastic raw materials could
potentially raise the cost of goods sold by up to 20%.
",
