Plants can reduce sickness<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Decorative plants in offices are effective in
\npreventing a disease called Sick Building Syndrome, a researcher
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Budi Harianto, an expert in environmental health at the
\nUniversity of Indonesia, said the syndrome comes from inhaling
\npolluted air in closed rooms.<\/p>\n
The syndrome which causes skin and eye irritation, coughing,
\nand headaches, \"can be reduced by placing decorative plants to
\nenable the recycling of polluted air,\" Budi was quoted by Antara
\nas saying.<\/p>\n
The plants' metabolism within its leaves, roots, and flowers
\nreduces dangerous chemical substances, Budi, a lecturer at the
\nPublic Health Faculty said.<\/p>\n
Suitable plants include Palem Bambu, evergreens, ivys and
\nlilies, he said.<\/p>\n
Budi said the strange syndrome was suffered mostly by people
\nworking inside rooms with poor air flow.<\/p>\n
The air is commonly polluted by benzene, formaldehyde, and
\ncarbon monoxide from office equipment such as printer ink, paint,
\nplastic, rubber, and carpets.<\/p>\n
Air pollution also stems from wax paper, tissue paper, glue,
\nand varnish, he said.<\/p>\n
