Plans to disrupt MPR session uncovered<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City police chief Maj. Gen. Hamami Nata
\nannounced yesterday that documentary evidence had been found of
\nplans to disrupt next month's General Session of the People's
\nConsultative Assembly.<\/p>\n
He said the documents indicated a particular group planned to
\nwreak havoc on the General Session.<\/p>\n
\"The group apparently does not only plan to cause trouble
\nbefore the session starts, but also during the session and after
\nthe session ends.<\/p>\n
\"This group of people call themselves the Democratic Order,\"
\nthe two-star general said yesterday.<\/p>\n
He refused to provide further details about the documents or
\nthe group.<\/p>\n
Hamami made the comments after installing Lt. Col. Sukirno as
\nchief of the newly established Jakarta Police Mobile Brigade
\n(Brimob).<\/p>\n
Brimob, which has about 12,000 personnel, was previously part
\nof the Directorate of On-Alert Police Unit (Samapta). But
\nyesterday's ceremony accorded Brimob independent status.<\/p>\n
City police spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang said police were
\nstill trying to identify the members of the Democratic Order
\ngroup who allegedly intended to disrupt the General Session.<\/p>\n
\"The group has been identified. But none of its members have
\nbeen arrested. We're still investigating them.\"<\/p>\n
Aritonang also refused to provide additional information about
\nthe documents or the group.<\/p>\n
\"All that we can tell you now is that some documents, which
\nhave been seized, indicate the existence of a group which has
\nplans to ruin the processes of the General Session.\"<\/p>\n
He said the documents were found this week at a location
\nwithin Greater Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"We have not gone too far with our investigation into the
\ndocuments and we have not found the group members, so we can't
\ntell whether they only aimed at disrupting the session or whether
\nthey planned something beyond that.\"<\/p>\n
It was unclear whether the documents or the group might have
\nbeen involved in January's explosion at a Tanah Tinggi apartment
\nin Central Jakarta, he said.<\/p>\n
Hamami reiterated that his office would treat the matter
\nseriously to prevent the group implementing its plan.<\/p>\n
\"We'll continue the investigation in accordance with the
\nregulations. There'll be no hesitation to take action against any
\nparty which attempts to create trouble.\" (cst)<\/p>",
