Plans for Jonggol<\/p>\n
Jonggol, which has long been known as a major West Javanese
\nrice granary and fruit-growing area, may soon take on a
\ncosmopolitan character. This is because of a proposal which has
\nbeen submitted to the authorities by PT Bukit Jonggol Asri. This
\nconsortium -- which was set up by the businessman Bambang
\nTrihatmodjo together with the Kaestindo Group, which is owned by
\nHaryadi Kumalal -- wants to develop Jonggol into a sort of self-
\nsufficient township containing residential neighborhoods and
\nother facilities such as a government area, tourist sites,
\nsporting grounds, woodlands and agricultural areas.<\/p>\n
The proposal has meanwhile raised a public debate. Those who
\nare for it argue that the plan would help lessen overcrowding in
\nJakarta, with its concentration of central government offices.
\nThe opening of a new government area (in Jonggol) would reduce
\nthe clutter in Jakarta, while at the same time spreading out the
\ndevelopment efforts towards a new and potential area.<\/p>\n
Those who are against the plan argue that it will be no easy
\nmatter to turn Jonggol into a center of government. Turning
\nJonggol into a government area would dictate integrated planning
\ninvolving many disciplines. This would be no simple job to
\naccomplish and take a good deal of time, effort and money.<\/p>\n
We hope and believe that the consortium has already thought
\nthe plan carefully through and that Jonggol's function as a water
\ncatchment area will be maintained. In developing Jonggol into a
\ntownship, the aspects of the area's inherent supporting capacity,
\nits natural function and its potential assets must not be
\nignored.<\/p>\n
Only if all this is taken into account can we expect Jonggol
\nto become an effectively functioning township, and only then can
\nwe expect the accomplishment of an integrated development effort
\nthat benefits both Jakarta as the national capital and West Java
\nas its supporting hinterland.<\/p>\n
