Plan to import chili shocks the House<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Clear reasons must be given for why the
\ngovernment plans to import chilies and meat, according to a
\nmember of the House of Representatives.<\/p>\n
Imam Churmen, deputy chairman of Commission IV, which deals
\nwith, among other things, agriculture, said he could understand
\nthe government's policy but enquiries must be made to find out
\nwhy the price of the chili has been soaring without good reason.<\/p>\n
\"Thorough studies must be made and don't use imports as the
\nanswer to the rocketing prices of commodities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Agriculture should have handled this
\nhorticultural problem, he added.<\/p>\n
The short supply of chilies was probably caused by disrupted
\ntransportation due to the recent floods. \"But there is also a
\npossibility that speculators' might also have played a role,\"
\nImam was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Imam's statements referred to the National Logistic Agency's
\nplan to import red chilies from Thailand.<\/p>\n
The agency head, Beddu Amang said on Monday that the agency
\nhad supplied a total of 18 tons of red chilies from Central Java
\nto markets in Jakarta in effort to curb the lofty price of the
\ncommodity.<\/p>\n
If the price of chilies cannot be controlled imports from
\nThailand are likely, Beddu said. He added imports could hamper
