Plan to eliminate minibus hailed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs Tb.M. Rais has
\nhailed the plan of the Organization of Land Transportation
\nBusinessmen to replace every two minibuses with one larger bus.<\/p>\n
Rais told reporters yesterday that the effort would reduce the
\nnumber of buses on major streets which would reduce traffic jams.<\/p>\n
The organization announced yesterday that its members have agreed
\nto the plan to improve traffic flow in the city.<\/p>\n
Chairman Aip Sjaifuddin said two major minibus companies, PT
\nMetro Mini and Koperasi Angkutan Jakarta, will replace 200 of their
\nminibuses with 100 big buses.<\/p>\n
Aip said that the new buses are expected to start operating in
\nApril. Other companies are expected to follow suit in the near
\nfuture.<\/p>\n
Rais urged minibus companies to combat the negative image of
\nminibuses through managerial changes. Minibus drivers are widely
\nregarded to be reckless and impolite.<\/p>\n
"The companies should use this opportunity to change their image
\nby strengthening their management," Rais said.<\/p>\n
He also proposed that they change their system of ownership. In
\nthe future bus owners will be shareholders only, with management in
\nseparate hands, Rais said.<\/p>\n
Currently, minibus companies consist of bus owners who manage
\ntheir own buses and pay certain fees to the management.<\/p>\n
Aip responded positively to Rais' proposal, saying that PT Metro
\nMini will modify its management.<\/p>\n
"PT Metro Mini will change its management system as well as the
\ncolor of its buses," Aip said, adding that in the future drivers
\nwill receive a monthly salary. At present, bus drivers hire the
\nbuses they drive for a daily fee.(yns)<\/p>",
