        "content": "<p>Places of death <br>\nfor animals<\/p>\n<p>The bird markets of Jakarta, Surabaya and elsewhere in <br>\nIndonesia are infamous throughout the world. Here, some of the <br>\nworld's most precious and endangered animals (the very heritage <br>\nof the children of Indonesia) are sold in the open, despite the <br>\nfact that they are supposed to be protected by both Indonesian <br>\nand international law. In the past, only animal lives were <br>\ninvolved.<\/p>\n<p>However, with the recent deaths in and around Jakarta from <br>\nbird flu, people should have every reason to fear the bird <br>\nmarkets and to demand that they be shut down--forever.<\/p>\n<p>Animals can transmit many diseases to people; these <br>\ndiseases are called zoonoses. The risk that animals can acquire <br>\nsuch diseases, and then pass them to people, is directly related <br>\nnot only to the cleanliness in which the animals are kept and <br>\nthe hygiene of the people who are in contact with them, but also <br>\nto how closely together the animals are packed and how stressed <br>\nthey are.<\/p>\n<p>Avian influenza is a zoonosis. The birds in bird markets are <br>\npacked together very closely in cages. They are frequently <br>\nstressed by dehydration, inadequate food, oppressive heat and by <br>\nthe hundreds of people walking by and peering into their cages.<\/p>\n<p>The bird markets are the perfect places for bird flu to <br>\nthrive! And if a pet bird is brought home from Pramuka, <br>\nJatinegara, Barito, Bratang or any of Indonesia's other <br>\noppressive bird markets, it could spread bird flu far and wide.<\/p>\n<p>Birds seized from the markets or from smugglers could be <br>\ntested for influenza and, if free of disease, turned over to <br>\nexpert wildlife rehabilitators for care.<\/p>\n<p>The cruelty and disregard for the protection of Indonesia's <br>\nspecial wildlife that is evident in the bird markets should be an <br>\nembarrassment to the Indonesian people. However, since \"just <br>\nanimals\" are involved, many people have ignored this problem. <br>\nNow, human lives are at stake.
