Members of the PKS and Gerindra factions in the House of\nRepresentatives (DPR) have voiced their respective views on the emerging\nproposal to hold regional elections without deputy regional head\ncandidates, which has been circulating in the DPR over the past\nweek.<\/p>\n
Member of Commission II of the DPR from the PKS faction, Mardani Ali\nSera, stated that his party rejects the proposal to hold regional\nelections (Pilkada) without deputies as a way to reduce disputes arising\nfrom the division of duties between the two positions.<\/p>\n
Mardani praised the idea of regional elections without deputies.\nHowever, he argued that disagreements between regional heads and their\ndeputies are more often caused by political maturity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is a good idea. But the root cause is political maturity. Having\na deputy is actually good because duties can be shared,\u201d Mardani said\nwhen contacted on Monday (10\/8).<\/p>\n
According to him, the task of serving the public cannot be placed on\na single person.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he stressed that both regional heads and deputy regional\nheads must not think in the short term by constantly vying for power\nafter taking office.<\/p>\n
Instead of eliminating deputy regional head candidates, Mardani said\nhis party is actually proposing that the nomination threshold for\nregional elections be lowered to between 6.5 and 8.5 percent.<\/p>\n
According to him, lowering the threshold is important to prevent\nforced political marriages between candidates.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith a sufficiently low threshold of 6.5\u20138.5 percent, one political\nparty can nominate a candidate alongside a community figure or academic.\nThe two can work together. Previously, because of the 20 percent rule,\nthere were many forced marriages,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Deputy Chairman of Commission II of the DPR from the\nGerindra faction, Bahtra Banong, said his party is not in a hurry\nregarding the proposal for regional elections without deputy regional\nhead candidates. Bahtra confirmed that there has been no discussion of\nthe Regional Election Bill in the DPR to date.<\/p>\n
He said his party is still focused on preparations for deliberating\nthe General Election Bill.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere has been no discussion yet. We are still concentrating on the\nGeneral Election Bill first,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
During a meeting of Commission II of the DPR with the Ministry of\nHome Affairs on Thursday (30\/8) last week, a member of the PKB faction,\nMuhammad Khozin, highlighted the role of deputy regional heads, who have\noften merely served as vote getters.<\/p>\n
However, in terms of governance, deputy regional heads have almost no\nduties or authority. In fact, tensions between the two parties are not\nuncommon.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet us just elect regional heads without deputies. Deputy regional\nheads can simply be appointed by the regional head.
