PKB turns Surabaya green<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: The National Awakening Party (PKB) concluded its
\ncampaign sessions here on Monday by turning the capital of East
\nJava into a sea of green with thousands of supporters roaming the
\nstreets on all sorts of vehicles.<\/p>\n
Heavy traffic jams resulted from the convoy, which the PKB
\nheld in defiance of the Surabaya Elections Supervisory
\nCommittee's warning. The party also held gatherings featuring
\nparty leaders Said Aqiel Siradj and Chofifah Indar Parawangsa and
\nmusician Franky Sahilatua, among others.<\/p>\n
In his speech at the campaign venue on Jl. Demak, Said, who is
\nalso secretary of Indonesia's largest Muslim organization
\nNahdlatul Ulama (NU), called on party supporters to maintain
\nnational unity.<\/p>\n
He said if PKB wins the elections, national development will
\nbe launched based on morality and professionalism.<\/p>\n
Also campaigning on Monday was the Justice Party, whose
\nactivists held various charitable activities at 25 different
\nlocations. The programs included stalls selling cheap staple
\nfood, free medical services, and hand-outs of second-hand
\nclothes, in Rungkut area, South Surabaya, and Margomulyo, West
\nSurabaya. The two areas are industrial estates.<\/p>\n
Governor Imam Utomo said he was thankful because campaigning
\nso far had proceeded peacefully. \"There have been minor
\nviolations of campaign rules, but nothing of significance such as
\nwhat happened in Central Java,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Imam was responding to a remark by chairman of the East Java
\nchapter of Nahdlatul Ulama, K.H. Hasyim Muzadi, that 25
\nprovocateurs from Jakarta had recently entered Surabaya.<\/p>\n
Hasyim said the provocateurs were seeking to create unrest as
\nhe said they had done in East Timor, West Kalimantan, Maluku and
\nPekalongan in Central Java. (nur)<\/p>",
