Pizza Hut gets 'halal' certificate<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Pizza Hut of Indonesia received a halal
\n(permissible by Islamic law) certificate from the Indonesian
\nUlemas Council yesterday after a two-year campaign.<\/p>\n
The certificate, which has been sought by many foreign
\nrestaurants, was handed over by the head of the council's Fatwa
\nCommission, Ibrahim Hosen, to Pizza's Hut country manager Kelvin
\nChen at one of its outlets in Cikini, Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
According to Chen, the decision to go halal was taken two
\nyears ago.<\/p>\n
\"The decision is not based on the increasing sales projection
\nbut simply because we respect the host country,\" he said. \"If the
\nhost country is mostly populated by Moslems, then why can't we
\nserve them with a halal menu?\" Chen said.<\/p>\n
Ninety percent of Indonesia's 200 million population is
\nMoslem.<\/p>\n
Nazri Adzani, the general secretary of the council's Food,
\nDrug and Cosmetic Research Institute said the certification was
\nnot an instant process.<\/p>\n
\"We examine the whole process starting with the raw material
\nand going through until it is processed and presented to the
\ncustomers,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The findings are then presented to the Fatwa Commission, which
\nissues a decree whether on whether the products are halal.<\/p>\n
Nazri said the council greatly appreciated the efforts made by
\nthe food and beverage industry to get halal certification.<\/p>\n
\"Food and beverages are the most substantive matters for human
\nbeings and therefore the need for high quality healthy conditions
\nis very important.\"<\/p>\n
Ibrahim Hosen said halal was not just a religious decision but
\nalso a matter of having a healthy attitude to consuming food.<\/p>\n
Pizza Hut of Indonesia, which is run by PT Sarimelati Kencana,
\nopened its first outlet in 1985. It now has 50 outlets, of which
