PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has carried out the\nrestoration of 100 coral reef fragments in the western seas of Bali as\npart of the company\u2019s commitment to preserving Indonesia\u2019s marine\nenvironment.<\/p>\n
Acting Corporate Secretary of PIS, Vega Pita, stated in Jakarta on\nFriday that this underwater ecosystem restoration was conducted in\ncollaboration with the environmental non-governmental organisation\nDivers Clean Action (DCA) and the Pejarakan Village Environmental Task\nForce. The activity is designed to support the achievement of\nSustainable Development Goal (SDG) 14, which focuses on Life Below\nWater.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough this programme, PIS aims to rehabilitate the physical\nstructure of damaged coral reefs to restore ideal natural habitats for\nvarious marine species to breed and forage,\u201d said Vega.<\/p>\n
The initiative, which took place on 24-25 July 2024, was accompanied\nby the Ocean LiteraSEA programme, an educational initiative for young\nchildren regarding the beauty of the Indonesian archipelago, as part of\nthe company\u2019s social and environmental responsibility (TJSL)\nprogramme.<\/p>\n
Vega added that PIS believes preserving the ocean must involve\nengaging coastal communities and future generations through tangible\naction and instilling a love for the sea from an early age. \u201cThe sea is\nour shared source of life, which we must care for together.\nSustainability is about how business and nature can walk hand in hand,\u201d\nhe explained.<\/p>\n
During the implementation, 100 coral reef fragments were placed at a\ndepth of three metres in the coastal waters of Pejarakan Village. To\nensure the sustainability and survival of the coral reefs, periodic\nmonitoring will be conducted every three months by the Pejarakan Village\nEnvironmental Task Force. Through this marine biodiversity programme,\nPIS has planted a total of 3,725 coral reef fragments across various\nIndonesian waters.<\/p>\n
In addition to the positive impact on the marine ecosystem, this\ncoral reef recovery is projected to provide socio-economic benefits to\nthe local community by strengthening the underwater tourism sector,\nwhich is a pillar of the local economy. Meanwhile, through the Ocean\nLiteraSEA Programme, PIS provides interactive marine literacy education\nbased on storytelling, alongside the distribution of educational\nfacilities and marine support tools for children in Pejarakan Village.\nPIS is also working with local coastal foundations to strengthen\neducational facilities and public infrastructure. This step represents\nPIS\u2019s commitment to supporting SDG 4, Quality Education, to promote\naccess to high-quality education for coastal communities.<\/p>\n
