Jakarta (ANTARA) - PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS),\ntogether with Inovasi Muda, is driving the improvement of marine\nliteracy and environmental awareness among the younger generation\nthrough the Ocean LiteraSEA programme, which targets communities in\ncoastal areas.<\/p>\n
This Social and Environmental Responsibility (TJSL) programme,\nfocused on the education pillar, has been operational since 2023 and has\nreached 61 coastal schools, with more than 3,600 students as\nbeneficiaries and producing 41 certified teachers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is where Ocean LiteraSEA comes in, to increase the knowledge\nand awareness of the community, especially the younger generation in\ncoastal areas, regarding the importance of protecting the sea,\u201d said\nRestu during the Indonesia Sustainability 3och Forum 2026.<\/p>\n
According to him, marine literacy is not limited to providing\nenvironmental knowledge, but also encourages children to care, take\naction, develop skills, and recognise future professional\nopportunities.<\/p>\n
Such behavioural changes are already visible at SD Negeri Sarang\nTiung in Kotabaru, South Kalimantan. A teacher at the school, Kusriati,\nnoted that students have begun reminding one another not to litter and\nare bringing these environmental conservation habits back to their\nhomes.<\/p>\n
In addition to providing education, Ocean LiteraSEA has revitalised\n25 libraries, processed 3.86 tonnes of waste, and provided scholarships\nto 15 young seafarers.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is our effort to prepare the generation that will protect the\nocean in the future. A generation that will eventually make decisions,\nlead change, and determine how our seas and natural resources are\nmanaged sustainably,\u201d said Vega.<\/p>\n
She assessed that investing in the younger generation is a vital part\nof maintaining the long-term sustainability of the maritime\necosystem.<\/p>\n
This urgency aligns with national waste issues. Based on data from\nthe National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) of the Ministry\nof Environment and Forestry, national waste generation in 2025 is\nestimated to reach 50.6 million tonnes, with approximately 40 per cent\nunmanaged and potentially ending up in the ocean.<\/p>\n
Marine debris can threaten biota, damage habitats, and disrupt food\nchains.
