Pipeline network vital to gas industry growth<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (Dow Jones): Transmission pipelines to link
\nIndonesia's scattered natural gas reserves to potential markets
\nare key to the development of the country's vast natural gas
\nresources, a senior official with PT Perusahaan Gas Negara said.<\/p>\n
But, standing in the way are two major \"problem areas\" -
\n\"inadequate standards and insufficient legislation.\" There is
\nalso \"no incentive to develop gas supplies in all areas of the
\neconomy,\" A. Qoyum Tjandranegara, president-director of the
\nstate-owned company, said.<\/p>\n
Indonesia needs \"a satisfactory and proper gas regulatory
\nnetwork\" to encourage increased investment in the sector and
\nunite \"all public and private sector forces in one big effort to
\ndevelop the gas industry,\" he noted.<\/p>\n
Already, Indonesia's energy policy \"gives priority to energy
\nefficiency together with a reduction of energy consumption and
\ncut in environmental pollution,\" said Tjandranegara.<\/p>\n
In line with the policy, the government is promoting the use
\nof natural gas in a number of sectors such as power generation,
\nfertilizers, steel and iron, he added.<\/p>\n
But the policy objectives can only become reality if the
\ncountry puts in place an adequate natural gas transmission and
\ndistribution network, at the center of which is the \"proposed
\nIndonesian Gas Transmission System (IGT),\" Tjandranegara noted.<\/p>\n
The IGT will link East Kalimantan, Java, Sumatra, Batam,
\nSingapore, Johor and Natuna reserves with the market.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia has many sources of natural gas which (are) more
\nthan sufficient to meet the domestic needs,\" the PGN president
\nsaid.<\/p>",
