Pipeline fiasco criticized<\/p>\n
The Bekasi city administration has been criticized for its
\ndecision to dismantle a newly completed water pipeline in front
\nof the Bekasi City Hall.<\/p>\n
The 800-meter pipeline was installed at a cost of Rp 150
\nmillion (US$16,300) and was then dismantled by the Bekasi City
\nPublic Works Agency after it was allocated an additional Rp 480
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
\"The construction and the dismantling of the water pipeline is
\nsuch a waste of time and money,\" Agus, a member of local non-
\ngovernmental organization Kerindu, was quoted as saying by Antara
\nnews agency on Thursday.<\/p>\n
\"It was not necessary for the city administration to dismantle
\nthe water pipeline. Instead that money could have been used for
\nmore useful projects.\"<\/p>\n
Agus, however, admitted that the project had upset residents
\nliving near the pipeline.<\/p>\n
\"The project was considered to have blocked the view of the
\nresidents as their houses were lower than the pipeline.<\/p>\n
\"The residents complained that the pipeline obstructed the
\nview from their houses,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Agus suggested the Bekasi city administration be more careful
\nin planning future projects in order to avoid just these types of
\ndifficulties.<\/p>\n
City councillor Rustam Effendi of the National Mandate Party
\n(PAN) faction shared Agus' opinion, saying the Bekasi city
\nadministration should pay more attention to details when planning
\nfuture projects.<\/p>\n
\"Bekasi city officials must improve their work because the
\nresidents are getting better at supervising the officials.<\/p>\n
\"On the other hand, residents must continue to keep an eye on
\nthe officials to make sure they improve their performance,\" he
