        "content": "<p>Pinatubo residents urged to leave<\/p>\n<p>MANILA (AFP): Philippine President Fidel Ramos yesterday<br>\ncalled on thousands of residents in low-lying areas near Pinatubo<br>\nvolcano to leave, to escape the frequent mudflows and ease the<br>\npressure on rescue and relief efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\"We appeal to the people of Pampanga (province), especially<br>\nthose in the immediate path of the lahar (volcanic mudflow), to<br>\nheed our advice and resettle instead of obstructing engineering<br>\nand public works efforts,\" he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The volcano killed about a thousand people during a mammoth<br>\n1991 eruption, and kills dozens every year as tons of volcanic<br>\nmaterial deposited on nearby slopes thunder down nearby river<br>\nchannels during the annual rainy season.<\/p>\n<p>Rescuers have charged that many of the 10,000 people trapped<br>\nin Bacolor town, north of Manila, during an avalanche last month<br>\nhad left resettlement sites and returned to their homes against<br>\ngovernment advice.<\/p>\n<p>The town of 70,000 people has been almost totally obliterated<br>\nby the mudflows.<\/p>",
