Pillory is next best to death for rapists<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The chairperson of the Indonesian Women's
\nCongress (Kowani) supports to idea of pillorying rapists by
\nbroadcasting their photographs on television.<\/p>\n
Enny Busiri said yesterday that pillorying would be the next
\nbest thing to a death sentence for rapists.<\/p>\n
"Given that the law in this country does not allow the death
\npenalty for rapists, then showing their faces on television could
\nhave the deterrent effect," Enny said as reported by Antara.<\/p>\n
Her organization is the umbrella group for over 70 women's
\norganizations in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Minister of Women's Roles Mien Sugandhi first proposed the
\nidea. She has since won wide support from people who think that
\nrapists get off too lightly in court.<\/p>\n
Enny said she agreed with the proposal, but stressed that the
\nrapists must first be proven guilty in court before being
\nostracized publicly on television.<\/p>\n
State television TVRI has been announcing the names of people
\nconvicted for corruption and broadcasting their photographs for
\nsome years now.<\/p>\n
Enny said that although she supported such action against
\nrapists, she was more concerned about providing help for rape
\nvictims.<\/p>\n
"We fully support the idea of establishing some kind of a
\ncenter to help rape victims, especially in restoring their mental
\ncondition after their ordeal," she said.<\/p>\n
Kowani is currently preparing an agency to provide
\nconsultation for rape victims, although it is avoiding using the
\nterm "crisis center"<\/p>\n
Enny said the agency will be staffed by Kowani executives,
\npolice officers and psychiatrists.<\/p>\n
