Pig enclosure protested<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): Hundreds of residents of Kohod, Tanjung
\nBurung, Tanjung Pasir and Melayu Barat villages in Pakuaji
\ndistrict here went to the Tangerang regency office on Monday,
\ndemanding the closure of a pig farm in their area.<\/p>\n
H. Sanusi, spokesman for the protesters, said they were forced
\nto go to the regency office because the complaints they'd filed
\nover the last few years had not been heeded.<\/p>\n
He said that the closure of the breeding center was badly
\nneeded because its owners dumped waste straight into the nearby
\nCisadane river, where local residents bathed, washed clothes and
\ntook water for drinking.<\/p>\n
\"Moreover the pig farm, which started operating in 1983, also
\nspreads a really bad smell over the surrounding area,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Most people living near the facility, he said, were devoted
\nMoslems, who frequently used water from the river to perform
\nablution before prayers.<\/p>\n
Sanusi said that residents sent letters of complaint on Sept.
\n20 to Tangerang regent Agus Djunara, West Java Governor R.
\nNuriana, the West Java Legislative Council, the Indonesian Ulemas
\nCouncil, the Jakarta Military Command and the Jakarta Police.<\/p>\n
\"If there is still no response, I will not hesitate to gather
\na bigger crowd to complain at the Tangerang regency office,\" he
