The names of the final 10 candidates for the high-powered
\nCorruption Eradication Commission (KPK) were submitted to
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri on Saturday, more than one month
\nafter the selection process started in early October.<\/p>\n
However, noted anticorruption activist Bambang Widjojanto,
\nwhom many had expected to gain a seat in the commission, was
\nobviously absent from the list, suggesting that he failed to pass
\nthe interview on Friday, when selection committee members looked
\ninto the track records of each candidate.<\/p>\n
\"We began our work to select these candidates in October and
\nconsidered public views at every stage (of the selection process)
\nto finally come up with these 10 names,\" Romli said after meeting
\nPresident Megawati.<\/p>\n
The final 10 are Mohammad Yamin, Marsilam Simandjuntak,
\nChairul Imam, Yaufiequrachman Ruki, Tumpak H. Panggabean, Momo
\nKelana, Iskandar Sonhadji, Sjahruddin Rasul, Erry Riyana
\nHardjapamekas and Amien Sunaryadi.<\/p>\n
\"We had many aspects to consider before determining the names
\nof final 10 candidates late last night,\" Romli said.<\/p>\n
However, the exclusion of Bambang, who is also chairman of
\nIndonesian Corruption Watch's (ICW) board of ethics, threw into
\nquestion the credibility of the whole selection process.<\/p>\n
Reliable sources within the selection committee told The
\nJakarta Post on Saturday that Bambang was excluded from the list
\nafter a long, heated debate among committee members.<\/p>\n
The exclusion of Bambang from the list had caused a rift among
\nthe selection team members, as some considered Bambang eligible
\nto be in the commission.<\/p>\n
Several team members, however, rejected Bambang, who is also
\nformer chairman of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI),
\non the grounds that he did not have the qualities needed for a
\nstate official.<\/p>\n
Romli declined to elaborate on the reasons why Bambang was
\nexcluded from the nomination, saying only that he did not meet
\nthe requirements.<\/p>\n
The President will submit the 10 names to the House of
\nRepresentatives, which will select five names as KPK commission
\nmembers. Megawati is slated to submit the names to the House on
\nDec. 12 at the latest.<\/p>\n
The names of five selected candidates will be sent back to the
\nPresident for approval before they are sworn in as KPK leaders.<\/p>\n
The commission should be established by Dec. 27 at the latest.<\/p>\n
Under the current anticorruption law, the KPK has the
\nauthority to investigate, seize assets and prosecute suspected
\ncorrupters. It may also take over investigation into corruption
\ncases closed by the Attorney General's Office.<\/p>\n
