Pickpockets beat conductor to death<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A Metromini bus conductor was beaten to death by
\na group, thought to be pickpockets, after he refused to allow
\nthem to board the public vehicle near the Tebet train station in
\nSouth Jakarta on Sunday.<\/p>\n
The incident took place after the victim, identified as
\nSuyadi, was involved in a dispute with the group of about 10
\npeople behind the minibus, which plied the Kampung Melayu-
\nManggarai route.<\/p>\n
The group had just gotten off the train from Bogor, said
\nSuradji, a colleague of the victim.<\/p>\n
\"Suddenly I heard one of the 10 people shout, 'What did you
\nsay?' to Suyadi,\" Suradji told The Jakarta Post on Sunday at the
\nCipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital (RSCM) in Central Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Some of the group had already entered the bus, while the
\nothers argued with the conductor, Suradji said.<\/p>\n
One of the group who had boarded the bus took a half-meter
\nlength of wood from the bus, approached the quarreling group and
\nhit the conductor in the back of the head with the wood.<\/p>\n
The attackers, believed to be pickpockets who usually operate
\nin the nearby Kampung Melayu market, fled on another passing
\nMetromini bus heading in the Jatinegara direction, he said.<\/p>\n
Suradji said the group were well-known to bus conductors and
\nbus drivers.<\/p>\n
\"They always go everywhere in a group,\" he said, adding that
\nthey usually refused to pay bus fares.<\/p>\n
No one in the area attempted to stop the beating or prevent
\nthe attackers from escaping, Suradji said, explaining that people
\nwere frightened by the size of the group.<\/p>\n
Suradji said he went to his injured colleague several minutes
\nafter the incident.<\/p>\n
\"I immediately rushed Suyadi to hospital by taxi,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Suyadi died an hour after being admitted to the hospital's
\nintensive care unit.<\/p>\n
\"A doctor told us he could have been saved if he had have had
\nimmediate surgery,\" he said.<\/p>\n
However, the hospital would not operate on Suyadi because the
\nvictim's colleagues could not afford the medical costs.<\/p>\n
\"We lack money,\" he said, adding that the victim's family
\ncould not be reached by phone at that critical time.<\/p>\n
Suyadi is survived by two children, who live on Jl. Asem
\nBaris, Tebet, in South Jakarta. (01)<\/p>",
