PIB seeks alliance with PPP Reformasi<\/p>\n

A prominent Indonesian economist wants his planned
\npolitical party to forge an alliance with the United Development
\nParty of Reform (PPP Reformasi).<\/p>\n
Dr. Sjahril, the chairman of the Alliance of a New Indonesia
\n(PIB), said here on Tuesday evening he saw numerous similarities
\nbetween the visions and political frameworks of his alliance and
\nof PPP Reformasi.<\/p>\n
One such similarity, he said, is the view that once a party
\nleader is elected as a legislator or is appointed to public
\noffice, he or she would relinquish his or her party post.<\/p>\n
PPP Reformasi, under the leadership of popular Muslim preacher
\nZainuddin M.Z., is a breakaway party of the United Development
\nParty led by Hamzah Haz, who is also the Vice President.<\/p>\n
PIB is a non-governmental organization which focuses on
\npolitical and economics research. The alliance has expressed its
\ndesire to set up a political party in September with an eye to
\nthe 2004 elections.<\/p>\n
"We both reject such double posting," Sjahril was quoted by
\nAntara as saying during a gathering of alliance board members and
\nmembers of the local Indonesian community. The gathering was
\norganized by the Indonesian Embassy.<\/p>\n
Sjahril said PPP Reformasi's insistence on the need to audit
\nthe wealth of government officials was compatible to PIB's
\nstance.<\/p>\n
According to present regulations, officials are asked to
\nreport their wealth to a state commission.<\/p>\n
Sjahril was invited by the Australian government to attend the
\nunveiling of the country's budget for 2002\/2003. He was
\naccompanied by a number of PIB board members, including Taufik
\nDarusman, Dedy Panigoro, Dr. Mari Pangestu and Dr. Chatib Basri.<\/p>",
