        "content": "<p>Phone venture announced<\/p>\n<p>LONDON (AFP): Britain's Cable and Wireless plc announced<br>\nyesterday a joint venture with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone<br>\nCorp. (NTT), trading house Itochu Corp., and Hong Kong<br>\nTelecommunications Ltd. to promote Japan's personal handyphone<br>\nsystem (PHS) in Asia.<\/p>\n<p>PHS International, which will be based in Hong Kong, will<br>\ninitially \"target Asian countries most suited to the technology\",<br>\nCable and Wireless said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Cable and Wireless and NTT\/NTT Mobile Communications Network<br>\nwill each hold a 27 percent stake in the venture, while Hong Kong<br>\nTelecom and Itochu will each have 23 percent. The four companies<br>\nwill make an initial investment of US$4 million, with the total<br>\ndivided according to their shareholdings.<\/p>\n<p>PHS telephones are smaller and cheaper than conventional<br>\ncellular telephones but do not allow communications to and from<br>\nfast-moving vehicles. The product is aimed at the mass consumer<br>\nmarket.<\/p>\n<p>The digital PHS network was developed in Japan, where 100,000<br>\nhandsets have already been sold since its launch two months ago.<br>\nThe country should yield a total customer base of 40 million by<br>\n2010, Cable and Wireless said.<\/p>",
