Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Philippines views a more coordinated and
integrated Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) not merely as
an aspiration, but as a necessity amid escalating geopolitical
uncertainties.

At a press conference in the International Media Center in Cebu for
the 48th ASEAN Summit on Wednesday, Deputy Minister of the Department of
Trade and Industry (DTI), Allan Gepty, stated that uncertainties
stemming from crises in the Middle East are once again testing economic
resilience worldwide, including for ASEAN’s 11 member countries.

“The current crisis underscores the need to deepen cooperation.
National responses alone are insufficient,” said Gepty, as quoted from
the official ASEAN 2026 website.

“We must strengthen regional coordination, particularly in energy
resilience, food resilience, logistics, and supply chain resilience… A
more integrated ASEAN is not just an aspiration; it is a necessity,” he
stressed.

Gepty added that ASEAN’s strength lies in its unity and cooperation,
describing the regional bloc as a coordinated, responsive, and
forward-looking economic community.

He stated that ASEAN integration over the decades has delivered real
benefits to its member countries, including the Philippines.

Regional trade enables producers, businesses, and farmers to access
broader markets, while micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) can
participate in regional value chains, he continued.

“This is not just an abstract idea. These are real, everyday benefits
stemming from our regional cooperation,” said Gepty.

Gepty remarked that the importance of ASEAN becomes even clearer
during crises. According to him, when energy prices rise, supply chains
tighten, and inflationary pressures increase, ASEAN provides a platform
for stability.

“Through regional cooperation, we help keep trade flows running,
avoid unnecessary restrictions, and maintain investor confidence,” he
stated.

Gepty also emphasised Cebu’s strategic role as host of the 48th
Summit, positioning it as a logistics and economic hub at the crossroads
of trade, tourism, and maritime connectivity in the region.

“By strengthening its role as a gateway for trade and services, Cebu
can help ensure supply chains remain efficient and economic activities
continue despite external disruptions. Thus, this bolsters the
Philippines’ role as a reliable and proactive partner in ASEAN,” he
said.

Looking ahead, Gepty stated that the Philippines’ ASEAN chairmanship
presents a key opportunity to help shape the region’s economic
future.

He mentioned the country’s Economic Outcomes Priorities, including
the implementation of the memorandum of understanding on the ASEAN Power
Grid, promotion of regenerative and resilient agricultural systems,
encouragement of foreign investment in high-growth green sectors,
development of digital trade rules, and expansion of trade
partnerships.
",
