        "content": "<p>Philippines urges Myanmar to grant ASEAN envoy access to Aung San Suu\nKyi<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines said access for ASEAN\u2019s special envoy would support\nengagement with all stakeholders and advance inclusive national\ndialogue.<\/p>\n<p>MANILA: The Philippines called on Myanmar on Wednesday (May 6) to\nallow ASEAN\u2019s special envoy to meet with detained leader Aung San Suu\nKyi, pressing for greater transparency after authorities allowed her to\nserve the remainder of her sentence under house arrest.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe view these developments as vital steps in a sequence of\nconfidence-building measures necessary for long-term national stability\nin Myanmar,\u201d the Philippines, serving as this year\u2019s chair of ASEAN,\nsaid in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs said Myanmar should\nallow Aung San Suu Kyi to communicate with her family to \u201cdemonstrate\ngenuine commitment to national reconciliation\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Access for ASEAN\u2019s special envoy would support engagement with all\nstakeholders and advance inclusive national dialogue, it said.<\/p>\n<p>The Philippines also said that the developments should be used to\nbuild momentum for political dialogue and reconciliation in Myanmar\nunder the ASEAN peace framework known as the Five-Point Consensus.<\/p>\n<p>Aung San Suu Kyi has been in detention since her elected government\nwas toppled in a 2021 coup.<\/p>\n<p>She has been serving a 27-year sentence after being convicted of\nmultiple offences based on charges her allies said were politically\nmotivated.<\/p>\n<p>Her sentence was commuted by one-sixth as part of an amnesty last\nmonth for thousands of prisoners, which also saw the release of her\nally, former President Win Myint.<\/p>",
