Jakarta (ANTARA) - As the holder of the ASEAN chairmanship in 2026,\nthe Philippines has emphasised the importance of the media\u2019s role in\nSoutheast Asia in broadcasting the joint steps agreed upon by ASEAN\nleaders to address the impacts of the Middle East conflict in the\nregion.<\/p>\n
According to Dave Gomez, Head of the Presidential Communications\nOffice (PCO) of the Philippines, the success of the 48th ASEAN Summit in\nCebu this week greatly depends on public communication carried out by\nthe media in Southeast Asia.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are confident that with your help, the key messages of unity,\nprogress, and collaboration from Cebu will shine strongly through your\norganisations and media channels,\u201d Gomez said while opening the ASEAN\n2026 International Media Centre in Cebu, Philippines, on Tuesday\n(5\/5).<\/p>\n
According to the ASEAN 2026 press release monitored in Jakarta on\nWednesday, the Head of the PCO of the Philippines revealed that the\nfocus of this ASEAN Summit includes issues of energy resilience and\nunified responses to mitigate the impacts of the Middle East conflict on\nASEAN member countries.<\/p>\n
Resilience in facing disasters is also part of this joint ASEAN\nagenda, with its member countries agreeing to advance a collaboration\nframework based on community-based early warning systems, rapid\nhumanitarian response, and support for affected communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cThrough your reporting, the world will understand the outcomes of\nregional security and peace, economic integration, sustainable\ndevelopment, and our shared commitment to \u2018Navigating Our Future\nTogether\u2019,\u201d Gomez said, referring to the theme of the Philippines\u2019 ASEAN\nchairmanship this year.<\/p>\n
On the same occasion, Cebu Governor Pamela S. Baricuatro reaffirmed\nher region\u2019s readiness to host the 2026 ASEAN Summit.<\/p>\n
She also hopes that the summit will be a momentum to open new\npartnerships and investments as well as sustainable tourism and\nlong-term economic development for Cebu.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo our ASEAN partners, we do not just welcome you as guests, but\nalso as collaborators in building a more dynamic and inclusive region,\u201d\nBaricuatro said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Cindi Chan, Mayor of Lapu-Lapu City, where the 48th ASEAN\nSummit is being held, said that the major agenda supports her region\u2019s\nefforts to position itself as a centre for MICE (meetings, incentives,\nconferences, and exhibitions) activities in the Philippines.<\/p>\n
