        "content": "<p>Philippines elected to host AdAsia &apos;97<\/p>\n<p>NUSA DUA, Bali (JP): The 19th Asian Advertising Congress<br>\nclosed here yesterday with the Philippines elected to host the<br>\n20th congress in 1997.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Manila has been a favorite from the beginning,&quot; said Baty<br>\nSubakti, the chairman of AdAsia &apos;95.<\/p>\n<p>Thailand won out for the 1990 congress, beating India by one<br>\nvote in the election.<\/p>\n<p>Baty admitted that there were political considerations in<br>\nIndia&apos;s defeat.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Security, for example, is one of the considerations; there<br>\nare also questions about visa applications for certain<br>\ncountries,&quot; Baty added.<\/p>\n<p>Baty said the organizing committee was satisfied with the<br>\noverall proceedings and outcome of the congress held by the Asian<br>\nFederation of Advertising Associations (AFAA).<\/p>\n<p>&quot;This is the largest AFAA congress in terms of participants,<br>\nwith over 1,400 attending. More importantly is the fact that two-<br>\nthirds of the participants came from abroad, which is why we can<br>\ncall this a very successful congress,&quot; said Baty.<\/p>\n<p>The congress also had more Asian speakers this year dealing<br>\nwith such topics as population growth control and economic<br>\n&quot;growth triangle&quot; arrangements between groups of three countries.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;President Soeharto&apos;s presence added weight to this congress<br>\nand his speech, which put stress on culture, was very fitting as<br>\nculture has been on our minds for quite some time,&quot; said Baty.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, AFAA chairman Yusca Ismail said that he had asked<br>\nhis successor, Divino M. Villanueva Jr. from the Philippines, to<br>\ncontinue AFAA&apos;s effort to talk China back into joining the<br>\ncongress.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;In the meantime, AFAA has suspended all of China&apos;s activities<br>\nat AFAA pending a meeting between the AFAA&apos;s new board and<br>\nChina,&quot; said Yusca.<\/p>\n<p>China was absent from the meeting because of Taiwan&apos;s<br>\nparticipation. China also withdrew its proposal to host the 1997<br>\ncongress.<\/p>\n<p>The closing of AdAsia &apos;95 was culminated in the presentation<br>\nof five awards for best advertisements and two research grants.<\/p>\n<p>A magazine advertisement entitled In To Err Is Human from<br>\nDentsu Inc. Tokyo won the U$5,000 Intisari Award for best<br>\nmagazine advertisement in addition to two other awards. Its entry<br>\nentitled Light &amp; Shadow won the $10,000 Rajawali Citra Televisi<br>\nAward for best TV commercial, while the A&amp;M Award and a cash<br>\nprize of $5,000 was awarded to Dentsu for best agency self-<br>\npromotion for its promotion entitled A Total Communication That<br>\nNever Stops Working For You.<\/p>\n<p>The Newsweek International AFAA Research Grant for best<br>\nresearch proposal worth $10,000 went to The Program for<br>\nAppropriate Technology in Health for its proposal Narrowcasting<br>\nfor Adolescent Behavior Change.<\/p>\n<p>Rina Sugihanti won the SRG-David Greenhald Memorial Trust<br>\nGrant of $5,000 for best research paper.<\/p>\n<p>The $10,000 P.K. Ojong Memorial Challenge Award for best<br>\npublic service advertising campaign went to Diamond Ad Ltd for<br>\nits advertisement No Smoking: &quot;A Portrait&quot;. This is the first<br>\ntime the P.K. Ojong Award was presented and the sponsor, the<br>\nKompas-Gramedia Group, has agreed to increase the cash prize to<br>\n$20,000 starting next year.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia&apos;s Sebuah Bingkai (A Frame) by Komunika Integrated<br>\nCommunication won the $10,000 Saburosuke Suzuki AFAA Advertising<br>\nAward for best newspaper advertisement.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The RCTI Award sponsored by the RCTI TV station will also be<br>\nincreased to $ 20,000 and the Intisari prize to $10,000,&quot; said<br>\nSjahrial Djalil, chairman of the nine-member jury for the best<br>\nadvertisement and research proposal.
