For many children, writing on a blackboard is a window to knowledge.\nBut for some, the letters appear only as a blur. They sit at the front\nof the class, squinting and guessing at what the teacher has written.\nUnnoticed, vision problems in children often go undetected. Many\nchildren consider blurry vision normal, while parents frequently face\naccess barriers or assume that eye examinations and glasses are\nprohibitively expensive. Yet good eyesight is a crucial foundation for a\nchild\u2019s educational success.<\/p>\n
Driven by concern over this issue, PT Pertamina Hulu Energi (PHE), as\nPertamina\u2019s Upstream Subholding, has introduced SHU Eco-Vation Day:\nLensa Energi. This Community Involvement & Development (CID)\ninitiative focuses on improving the eye health of primary school-aged\nchildren in the company\u2019s operational areas. Through eye health\nexaminations and the provision of glasses for students with medical\nindications, the programme aims to support the early detection of vision\nproblems, enabling students to learn more comfortably and optimally.<\/p>\n
The programme was launched at SDN 01 Pagi Pulau Kelapa, Kepulauan\nSeribu, on Wednesday, 22 July 2026, involving more than 160 Year 5 and\nYear 6 students from SDN 01 and SDN 02 Pagi Pulau Kelapa. This marks the\nfirst step of an initiative that will reach 15 operational areas of PHE\nUpstream Subholding Pertamina, covering Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and\nEastern Indonesia, with a target of over 2,200 students receiving eye\nexaminations.<\/p>\n
PT Pertamina Hulu Energi\u2019s Director of Risk Management, Whisnu\nBahriansyah, stated that Pertamina\u2019s presence is not solely to safeguard\nnational energy security, but also to deliver tangible benefits to\ncommunities surrounding the company\u2019s operational areas. \u201cPertamina Hulu\nEnergi, through PHE OSES, operates in offshore waters not far from where\nwe stand today. This means the people of Pulau Kelapa are neighbours to\nour operational area. We believe that a good company is measured not\nonly by production figures, but also by the beneficial footprint it\nleaves for the community to grow together harmoniously,\u201d he said in an\nofficial statement on Friday (24\/7\/2026).<\/p>\n
He explained that the SHU Eco-Vation Day: Lensa Energi programme was\nborn from a spirit of combining ecosystem and innovation, an approach\nthat encourages a balance between environmental sustainability and\ncommunity development in operational areas. According to him, Lensa\nEnergi was chosen because children\u2019s eye health issues are often\ninvisible, yet have long-term impacts. \u201cA child who cannot read the\nwriting on the blackboard clearly often does not realise it. They may be\nconsidered less focused or less capable, when what they actually need is\na pair of glasses to see the world more clearly,\u201d Whisnu said.<\/p>\n
The programme also embodies the spirit of employee volunteerism and\ncollaborative social actions, with Pertamina Upstream Subholding\nofficers directly involved as volunteers alongside local government,\nhealth workers, and school staff. The activity uses an Area Based\nImplementation approach, with eye examinations conducted directly at\nschools by medical personnel from local health facilities competent in\nperforming eye checks and issuing prescriptions. All glasses provided\nunder the programme adhere to eye health standards.<\/p>\n
This activity was carried out in collaboration with the Kepulauan\nSeribu Administrative Regency Government, North Kepulauan Seribu\nDistrict, Pulau Kelapa Village, Pulau Kelapa Community Health Centre,\nand SDN 01 and SDN 02 Pagi Pulau Kelapa. The Regent of Kepulauan Seribu,\nMuhammad Fadjar Churniawan, expressed his appreciation and support for\nthe SHU Eco-Vation Day: Lensa Energi programme. \u201cI would like to thank\nPHE and colleagues from PHE OSES who today conducted eye screening and\nprovided glasses for our students here in Pulau Kelapa. The SHU Eco-Vation Day: Lensa Energi programme also supports the\ncompany\u2019s ESG implementation by demonstrating real impact, contributing\nto Sustainable Development Goals 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and 4\n(Quality Education). The programme also supports the fourth Asta Cita of\nthe Government of the Republic of Indonesia, which focuses on human\nresource development.
