PGN workers donate wages<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Employees of the state-owned gas distributor,
\nPGN, have agreed to donate all or part of their January salaries
\nto the government to help in fighting the economic crisis, the
\ncompany president announced yesterday.<\/p>\n
A Qoyum Tjandranegara said directors would contribute the
\ntotal amount of their salaries, and the rest of the employees
\nwould contribute half.<\/p>\n
He said the measure was taken following an agreement between
\nmanagement and employee representatives.<\/p>\n
"We are doing this to show our concern for the country's
\neconomic crisis. Many of us don't have any dollars to participate
\nin the Love Rupiah campaign," Qoyum said, referring to the
\nongoing move to have citizens change dollars into rupiah.<\/p>\n
The currency has depreciated sharply against the U.S. dollar
\nsince the middle of last year.<\/p>\n
Qoyum said the donation would reach about Rp 1 billion
\n(US$125,000), which would be delivered to the central bank next
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
He said the company had not forced its employees to
\nparticipate in the campaign, but that they had chosen to make the
\ndonations of their own accord.<\/p>\n
