        "content": "<p>PT Perusahaan Gas Negara (PGN) will develop the potential of coalbed\nmethane (CBM) in Tanjung Enim, South Sumatra. PGN estimates the coalbed\nmethane potential in the region reaches approximately 9.7 trillion cubic\nfeet (TCF) of original gas in place (OGIP), with an estimated economic\nvalue of around US$15.4 billion. PGN President Director Arief K.\nRisdianto said CBM development is part of the company\u2019s strategy to seek\nunconventional gas supply sources amid increasing domestic energy needs.\nCoalbed methane is natural gas trapped within coal seams. This gas is\nformed when plant material undergoes geological processes and transforms\ninto coal. The gas is projected to become a domestic supply source to\nmeet industrial and power generation needs. PGN is targeting gas\ndistribution from this project to be carried out in stages, starting\nfrom 1 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) up to 25 MMSCFD.\nBesides CBM, PGN is developing the potential of biomethane derived from\npalm oil waste and synthetic natural gas (SNG) in South Sumatra. The\nthree sources will be integrated through the construction of an\ninjection point or gas collection point before being channelled into the\nexisting transmission pipeline network. Arief assessed that the\nintegration of pipeline and non-pipeline infrastructure is key to\naccelerating the utilisation of domestic gas sources while strengthening\nthe national energy supply. \u201cWith this infrastructure, gas originating\nfrom CBM, biomethane, and other sources can be collected and distributed\nthrough the existing transmission network,\u201d Arief said in a written\nstatement on Monday, 6 July 2026. However, Arief noted that project\nimplementation still requires support from various stakeholders,\nparticularly in resolving several administrative aspects and building\nsupporting infrastructure.<\/p>",
