Petronas-Union Carbide deal<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (DPA): The Malaysian state oil firm Petronas
\ninked a deal yesterday with U.S.-based Union Carbide Corporation
\nto jointly build and operate an integrated chemicals complex
\naimed at turning Malaysia into a regional petrochemical center.<\/p>\n
The 2 billion dollar complex, to be ready at northeastern
\nKertih town by 2001, will be the region's first totally
\nintegrated complex covering production of raw material to
\nshipments of finished products, company officials said.<\/p>\n
The deal covers three separate projects in Kertih in
\nTerengganu state and a derivatives plant to supply feedstock for
\ndetergents, paints, cosmetics, textiles and adhesives.<\/p>\n
Hassan Marican, Petronas chief executive officer, said the
\ncompany had entered into about 15 billion ringgit worth of joint
\nventures over the past two years to develop the domestic
\npetrochemical industry, with firms such as Germany's BASF and
\nJapan's Idemitsu.<\/p>",
