        "content": "<p>Petronas plans to buy KL Grand Prix circuit<\/p>\n<p>Associated Press, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia<\/p>\n<p>National oil company Petronas plans to buy Malaysia's Formula One<br>\nGrand Prix circuit from another government-controlled company, a<br>\nsenior executive said.<\/p>\n<p>But Petroliam Nasional Bhd.'s bid to buy the Sepang Circuit<br>\nfrom Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd. was not a bailout, Petronas<br>\nPresident Mohd Hassan Marican said.<\/p>\n<p>\"Why should it be a bailout? It is part of our plan to develop<br>\nand promote motor sports in the country,\" Mohd Hassan was quoted<br>\nThursday as telling the Business Times newspaper.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia Airports operates the Kuala Lumpur International<br>\nAirport, located next to the track about 70 kilometers (43 miles)<br>\nsouth of the country's largest city.<\/p>\n<p>The ultramodern airport, which opened in 1998, and purpose-<br>\nbuilt track, which hosted Malaysia's first Grand Prix the<br>\nfollowing year, are symbols of auto racing enthusiast Prime<br>\nMinister Mahathir Mohamad's hopes of making this Southeast Asian<br>\ncountry a developed nation by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>In 1995, Petronas has been one of the main sponsors of the<br>\nSauber Petronas Formula One team, which finished to 2001 season<br>\nfourth in the constructors championship behind Ferrari, McLaren<br>\nMercedes and Williams.<\/p>\n<p>Malaysia also has links with the Minardi team, which is<br>\nexpected to announce a new sponsorship deal with Malaysia along<br>\nwith its 2002 car this month or in January.<\/p>\n<p>Sports Minister Hishammuddin Hussein said recently the new<br>\nMinardi car would \"definitely carry a Malaysian image.\"<\/p>\n<p>Alex Yoong, the first Malaysian driver in Formula One racing,<br>\nwas signed to the Minardi team for the three last races of 2001.<br>\nHe failed to finish the first two races and came 16th of 17<br>\ndrivers who finished the final race.<\/p>\n<p>Petronas' Mohd Hassan said the company had talked about buying<br>\nthe Sepang circuit as far back as 1996, when Malaysia was picked<br>\nto host a Formula One race.<\/p>\n<p>\"We will find a fair and reasonable value ... we are still<br>\nnegotiating,\" he was quoted as saying.<\/p>",
