Petronas awards contracts<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): Malaysia's national oil firm Petroliam
\nNasional Bhd. (Petronas) yesterday awarded three production
\nsharing contracts to its unit Petronas Carigali and three
\ncompanies of Shell Malaysia.<\/p>\n
The pacts were for exploring new gas and oil reserves in two
\noffshore blocks in eastern Sarawak and Sabah state, and a
\ndeepwater block in Sabah, said Petronas president and chief
\nexecutive Mohd. Hassan Marican.<\/p>\n
Petronas Carigali would team up with Sarawak Shell Bhd., Sabah
\nShell Petroleum Company and Shell Sabah Selatan for the three
\ncontracts involving a minimum investment of 115 million ringgit
\n(US$46 million), he said.<\/p>\n
Mohd. Hassan said Petronas has focused on attracting continued
\ninvestments for exploration to enhance the nation's hydrocarbon
\nreserves and maintain the growth of the petroleum industry, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Malaysia production of liquefied natural gas is expected to
\nincrease to 23 million tons annually by 2001, making it the
\nworld's second largest producer of after Indonesia, he added.<\/p>",
