Jakarta (ANTARA) - Petrokimia Gresik, an agroindustry solutions\ncompany and member of the Pupuk Indonesia holding, is strengthening its\nstrategy to secure sulphur supplies as a strategic commodity for the\nnational fertiliser and chemical industries amid geopolitical dynamics\nin the Middle East.<\/p>\n
This effort, according to Petrokimia Gresik\u2019s President Director,\nDaconi Khotob, is part of the company\u2019s commitment to maintaining\nnational food security and supporting domestic industrial\nself-reliance.<\/p>\n
Around 33 per cent of world sulphur trade, or 20 million tonnes per\nyear, comes from the Persian Gulf region, he continued in his statement\nin Jakarta on Wednesday, and Indonesia still imports more than 75 per\ncent of its sulphur needs from the Middle East region.<\/p>\n
\u201cGeopolitical conflicts and global logistics disruptions can affect\nworld sulphur prices and supplies,\u201d Daconi said.<\/p>\n
On the other hand, national sulphuric acid needs continue to increase\nand currently reach around 19 million tonnes per year, with the largest\ncontribution coming from the fertiliser sector and mineral downstreaming\nindustries, particularly nickel.<\/p>\n
According to him, this situation positions Indonesia as one of the\nworld\u2019s sulphur demand centres, making sulphur a strategic commodity in\nsupporting national food security and industrial resilience.<\/p>\n
While speaking at the Argus Fertilizer Asia Conference 2026\ninternational conference in Bali on Tuesday (31\/3), he explained that\nPetrokimia Gresik is not only part of the sulphur supply chain but also\npart of the solution for the national industry.<\/p>\n
This state-owned fertiliser company, he added, has a sulphuric acid\nplant with a production capacity of 1.8 million tonnes per year,\nintegrated with the fertiliser production process and other chemical\nproducts.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have facilities for processing sulphur into sulphuric acid that\nare integrated with the fertiliser production process and chemical\nproducts. Through these facilities, the company also contributes to\nstrengthening domestic industrial raw material supplies,\u201d Daconi\nexplained.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, Daconi conveyed that global geopolitical dynamics\naffecting sulphur supplies and prices demand that the company strengthen\nraw material supply security strategies through supply chain enhancement\nand optimisation of domestic production capacity.<\/p>\n
To that end, the company is implementing several strategic steps,\nincluding diversifying sulphur supply sources, strengthening long-term\ncontracts to maintain supply and price stability, and enhancing raw\nmaterial storage and distribution infrastructure.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese steps are important to maintain the resilience of the national\nfertiliser and chemical industries, given that sulphur and sulphuric\nacid are key raw materials in the production of phosphate and NPK\nfertilisers, and are used in various industries such as metal\nprocessing, water treatment, and other chemical industries,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He added that Indonesia is currently a global demand centre for\nsulphur, driven by mineral downstreaming policies, expansion of the\nnickel battery supply chain along with the growth of electric vehicle\n(EV) battery production, which increases sulphur needs, particularly for\nthe high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) process that uses large amounts\nof sulphuric acid, as well as increasingly stringent environmental\nregulations that boost sulphur-based processing needs.<\/p>\n
Daconi emphasised that amid current global dynamics, Petrokimia\nGresik\u2019s main focus is to maintain supply and production stability so\nthat national fertiliser needs can still be met properly as part of\nsupporting national food self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n
