Bali\u2019s waste management issues have reached a certain stage over the\nlast couple of weeks.<\/p>\n
With the island\u2019s biggest open landfill officially no longer\naccepting organic waste, the whole trash processing system has fallen\ninto disarray.<\/p>\n
Illegal trash dumping has been recorded in the popular resort of\nKuta, and both residents and tourists have noticed a sharp increase in\ntrash burning across the island.<\/p>\n
Over the last week, piles of trash have been accumulating around Kuta\nBeach. The issue had caught the attention of the Kuta Traditional\nVillage, which has been working with the Environment and Forestry Agency\nto remove the trash from the popular tourist destination, but more bags\nkeep appearing. The situation is now a public health concern as flies\nhave started amassing around the waste piles, and there are concerns\nthat vermin will soon follow.<\/p>\n
Local hotels have taken matters into their own hands by calling Pest\nControl to spray for flies and help mitigate the issue. Pest Control\nOfficer Gede Rai Eka had a quick chat with reporters and said that he\nhad been called out by Kuta\u2019s Tribe Hotel to combat the problem.<\/p>\n
One of the biggest issues with the piles of trash is that the bags\ncontain mixed waste. With organic and non-organic material now mixed\ntogether in the bags, the waste cannot be dumped at open landfill sites\nlike Suwung TPA. The bags are filled with both plastic waste and food\nleftovers, including coconuts.<\/p>\n
Eka explained that the flies are not only congregating around the\ntrash but also entering nearby businesses and the beachfront. Speaking\nseparately, Marketing Communication at Tribe Bali Kuta Beach, Astri\nPirawitnawati, noted that the presence of trash across from the hotel\ncould disrupt hotel guests\u2019 comfort.<\/p>\n
She explained, \u201cOf course, some parts of it do disturb guests\u2019\ncomfort. Our hotel does have a beach view and is located close to the\nbeach. That\u2019s why we promote the beach as an attractive destination for\nguests.\u201d Though there have not been any formal complaints yet, top\nhotels like Tribe and other leading resorts in Kuta don\u2019t want to run\nthe risk of disappointed guests. She shared, \u201cWe\u2019re anticipating this to\nprevent complaints. So far, there haven\u2019t been any complaints about\ntrash on Kuta Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pirawitnawati added, \u201cWe anticipate this by sending pest control\npersonnel there regularly to check and exterminate flies. This way, the\nflies don\u2019t spread further throughout the hotel. As soon as our team saw\nthe flies, we immediately sent pest control there to minimize the number\nof flies entering the hotel.\u201d<\/p>\n
She also explained how the hotel has long been doing its part to\nminimize waste production and confirmed that the trash piles have\nnothing to do with the hotel.<\/p>\n
Pirawitnawati shared, \u201cWe use glass for drinking water in our rooms\nto reduce plastic waste. We also recycle organic waste into fertilizer\nfor our plants. So, we can confirm that the\ntrash in front of the hotel is not ours.\u201d<\/p>\n
The hotel and the Kuta Traditional Village are now coordinating\nefforts to install more CCTV across the hotel and the surrounding Kuta\nBeach area to catch the culprits who are dumping waste and improve the\noverall security of the area. She concluded, \u201cIt\u2019s true, there are some\nindividuals who dump trash here because it\u2019s a public space. That\u2019s why\nthe village head, Legian Traditional Village, and Kuta Village are\nplanning to install CCTV so we can identify the perpetrators.\u201d<\/p>\n
Separately, officers from Bali\u2019s Civil Police, Satpol PP, have\nconfirmed that they will be taking legal action against those found to\nbe dumping trash in public areas and tourism resorts.<\/p>\n
Badung Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) Chief I Gusti Agung Ketut\nSuryanegara told reporters, \u201cWe have processed violations all the way to\ntrial, with various stages and approvals. In our lawsuit, we even\nproposed a fine of up to IDR 10 million. However, in reality, violators\nwere only fined IDR 100,000.\u201d<\/p>\n
Though he noted that fines may not be the most effective measure in\nthe long term, noting \u201cThe process is long, and it\u2019s not easy to get to\ntrial. But when the result is only Rp 100,000, of course, we consider\nlooking for other, more effective measures.\u201d<\/p>\n
He concluded, \u201cWe want a real deterrent effect. With on-site trials,\nthe public can directly see the consequences of these violations. We\nhope this measure will receive support from various parties, including\nother law enforcement officials, so that efforts to maintain\nenvironmental cleanliness in the Badung area can be more optimal.\u201d<\/p>\n
