'Pesantren' won't be regulated<\/p>\n
SURABAYA: The government has denied speculation that thousands
\nof Islamic boarding schools, known as pesantren, will be
\nregulated across the nation.<\/p>\n
Sahal Mahfudz, a prominent Moslem leader who is also a member
\nof the National Education Advisory Council, told The Jakarta Post
\nyesterday that Islamic boarding schools were old, unique
\neducation institutions. \"The schools fall under the jurisdiction
\nof the Ministry of Religious Affairs, but their system of
\neducation cannot be separated from the national education
\nsystem,\" he said.<\/p>\n
\"The pesantren will not be regulated to become uniform,\" he
\nsaid. \"Instead, their uniqueness and diversity will be preserved
\nand integrated into the whole national education system.\"<\/p>\n
Sahal is on a three-day tour of boarding schools in East Java,
\nalong with other council members including Prof. Makaminan
\nMakagiansar, Sayidiman Suryohadiprojo, Tanri Abeng, Prof. Achmad
\nBaiquni, Mohammad Noer and M. Djazman Al Kindi.<\/p>\n
One of the schools that the council visited was the
\nHidayatullah boarding school. The school's administrator, Abdur
\nRahman, said that by letting each pesantren school develop its
\nown characteristics, national education would be enriched.<\/p>\n
