Pertina hopes RI boxers will qualify to Olympics<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Indonesian Boxing Association (Pertina)
\ndeputy secretary-general, Didiet Soedijoto, said on Friday that
\nnational boxers would be able to qualify for the 2000 Olympics at
\na qualification match in Seoul from Dec. 17 to Jan. 25.<\/p>\n
Didiet said Pertina was optimistic that its boxers would
\nqualify for the Olympics after coaches Ferry Moniaga and Frans VB
\nstated after a meeting with chairman Sang Nyoman Suwisma that
\nmany strong boxers qualified for the Olympics in a pre-Olympics
\nqualifying round in Tashkent earlier this month.<\/p>\n
Didiet expects five boxers to qualify as they will have less
\npowerful rivals in the qualification in Seoul.<\/p>\n
Antara said the five boxers are flyweight boxers Dede Chandra
\nand Wardoyo, lightweight boxer Marwan Muling, light welterweight
\nSteve Binalay and light middleweight Willem Papilaya.<\/p>\n
Didiet said Marwan originally competed in the featherweight
\ndivision but since he had to fight against Wilpare Jamhur,
\nPertina decided to move him to the lightweight division. The same
\nsituation happened with Steve Binalay, who used to fight in the
\nwelterweight, and had to lose weight to compete in the light
\nwelterweight division.<\/p>\n
Only Wardoyo is a newcomer to the team. He joined the team
\nafter winning the national championships in Jayapura, Irian Jaya,
\nlast month. Pertina considers him to have a good future.<\/p>\n
Didiet said Pertina would start its centralized training
\nprogram in December. The association will also hire a Cuban
\ncoach, who is expected to arrive here next month.<\/p>\n
Pertina will also stage an overseas stint for its boxers
\nbefore competing in the last pre-Olympics qualification in
\nBangkok from June 1 to June 7. (yan)<\/p>",
