Pertamina's new president expected to be found soon<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The new commissioners of the state oil and gas
\nPertamina expect to find a new president for the company in one
\nor two weeks, Minister of Mines and Energy Susilo Bambang
\nYudhoyono said on Friday.<\/p>\n
Bambang, who is also president commissioner of Pertamina, said
\nPertamina's board of commissioners was currently studying
\npotential candidates to replace the current president, Martiono
\nHadianto.<\/p>\n
\"We have yet to decide when to replace him (Martiono), but the
\nsooner the better,\" Bambang told reporters at his office.<\/p>\n
He said the new president of Pertamina should be capable and
\nmeet the criteria set by President Abdurrahman Wahid.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman, popularly known as Gus Dur, asked ministers on
\nThursday to select a new president for Pertamina -- someone who
\nis honest, able to conduct transparent management and capable of
\nleading Pertamina in an era of global competition.<\/p>\n
Bambang declined to specify the reason why President
\nAbdurrahman wanted to replace Martiono, but he denied the
\nallegation that \"Martiono has failed.\"<\/p>\n
He said he understood that Pertamina's leadership needed
\n\"refreshing\" as it was going to carry out the difficult task of
\nturning itself into an efficient and productive oil and gas
\ncompany.<\/p>\n
When asked whether the government also intended to replace
\nPertamina's board of directors, Bambang said the government was
\ncurrently only focusing on Martiono's replacement.<\/p>\n
Separately, Martiono said he appreciated Gus Dur's intention
\nto replace him and find a new leader for Pertamina.<\/p>\n
\"Gus Dur made a normal, clear and fair statement. It's normal
\nthat a president chooses new assistants who will go in-line with
\nhis or her policy,\" Martiono told reporters at a small meeting in
\nPertamina's head office.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, he said, in setting the criteria for Pertamina's
\nnew leader, Gus Dur had publicly revealed the quality of
\nPertamina's future president, and as such had invited them to
\ntake part in controlling the new leader's performance.<\/p>\n
Martiono also said that unlike former president Soeharto and
\nB.J. Habibie, Gus Dur had opted to comply with existing
\nregulations that require Pertamina's board of commissioners to
\nnominate the candidates for Pertamina's president.<\/p>\n
\"Soeharto always handpicked Pertamina's new president by
\nhimself, but he did it such a way that his minister of mines and
\nenergy appeared to make the nomination,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Pertamina's new board of commissioners was inaugurated
\nyesterday by Gus Dur.<\/p>\n
Asked whether a change in Pertamina's leadership would affect
\nthe company's current restructuring programs, Martiono said he
\nexpected that would not happen as the programs were in-line with
\nthe government's policies.<\/p>\n
As part of the restructuring program, Pertamina would invite
\nan international consultancy firm to evaluate the performances of
\nPertamina's directors and unit heads, Martiono said.<\/p>\n
\"We'll invite an international agency for this job, because I
\nwant the assessment to be objective,\" he said.<\/p>\n
According to Martiono, there was a big chance one of
\nPertamina's employees could become president in the future.<\/p>\n
\"Out of 28,800 employees, we should have the right person,\" he
