Pertamina's management<\/p>\n
I would like to comment on the article Caltex's view on
\nPertamina 'faulty' (Thursday, Aug. 14) by R.O. Hutapea.<\/p>\n
I think Mr. Hutapea did a good job presenting facts about
\nEnhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) expertise that Pertamina acquired
\nand about the history of LNG in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
But in my opinion, there are other factors to consider when
\nevaluating the management of oil fields by Pertamina instead of
\nCaltex. The two main factors are management and the application
\nof technology.<\/p>\n
Around the world, in general, I think government
\nowned\/operated companies are less efficient than private
\ncompanies.<\/p>\n
Although Pertamina has some experts in EOR technology, can it
\nproperly apply and manage the technology and associated
\nactivities as well as realize production at a cost equal to or
\nlower than Caltex?<\/p>\n
Caltex is owned by two major oil companies (Chevron and
\nTexaco) who are well-known for their efficiency, human resources
\ndevelopment and bottom-line results.<\/p>\n
In what kind of company would investors prefer to place their
\nmoney? Through which company will the best results for Indonesia
\nbe realized?<\/p>\n
In regards to LNG, I agree fully with Mr. Hutapea. If it had
\nnot been for the vision of Mr. Ibnu Sutowo (Pertamina) or had
\nPertamina only listened to the production sharing contractors,
\nthe LNG business in Indonesia would not have been developed.
\nPertamina's wise decision, at that time, made Indonesia the
\nworld's largest LNG exporter.<\/p>\n
We must weigh up several factors when deciding which is the
\nbest course -- on a case by case basis.<\/p>\n
I hope the correct decision will be made for the benefit of
\nIndonesia and its people.<\/p>\n
