Pertamina workers to go on strike<\/p>\n

Thousands of workers at state oil and gas company Pertamina say
\nthey will hold a nationwide strike on Wednesday in protest
\nagainst a plan for massive layoffs.<\/p>\n
Pertamina president Widya Purnama recently signed a decision
\naimed at terminating some 4,015 contract workers in the company.<\/p>\n
\"We have received confirmation from several regions (to join)
\nthe nationwide strike on Wednesday,\" chairman of the Pertamina
\nlabor union (FSPPB) Ugan Gandar told Antara on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
FSPPB has some 17,000 members.<\/p>\n
He said that the strike was aimed solely at defending the
\ninterests of workers, some of whom have been with the company for
\naround 20 years.<\/p>\n
Ugan said that the strike would be held at all units of
\nPertamina in 19 working areas including Pangkalan Brandan and
\nMedan (North Sumatra), Tanjung Uban and Dumai (Riau), Plaju
\n(South Sumatra), Balongan and Kamojang (West Java), Cilacap,
\nCepu, and Semarang (Central Java), Bontang (East Kalimantan), and
\nSorong (Papua).<\/p>\n
Antara has reported that employees in several regions such as
\nCilacap, Balongan, and Cepu had already set up tents in their
\nworking areas in preparation for the strike.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, workers plan to conduct a protest march from
\nPertamina headquarters on Jl. Medan Merdeka Timur to the Office
\nof the State Ministry of State Enterprises, the State Palace, the
\nHotel Indonesia roundabout, and ending at the Office of the
\nMinistry of Manpower and Transmigration.<\/p>\n
Thousands of the company's contract workers have been restive
\nfollowing the issuance of the Pertamina president's decision on
\nJuly 26, 2005 to dismiss non-permanent workers.<\/p>\n
The labor union had previously sent a letter to President
\nSusilo Bambang Yudhoyono, asking him to revoke the decision,
\nwhich is deemed in violation of Law No. 13\/2003, which does not
\npermit unilateral mass dismissals.<\/p>\n
According to the decree, the contract workers would receive
\nseverance payment whose size would depend on their length of
\nservice to the company. Workers employed for less than four years
\nwould receive compensation of two month's salary, while those
\nemployed for more than 20 years would receive compensation of
\nnine times their salary.<\/p>",
