Pertamina to continue restructuring<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The newly installed president of state-owned oil
\nand gas company Pertamina, Soegianto, pledged yesterday to
\ncontinue and give priority to the company's ongoing restructuring
\nprogram.<\/p>\n
Soegianto, 67, said Pertamina's new board of directors would
\ncontinue restructuring and streamlining the company's operations.<\/p>\n
\"Pertamina's restructuring will last at least five years. So
\nthe new directors will continue the program,\" he told Antara
\nafter his inauguration ceremony.<\/p>\n
On the tightening of the company's workforce, he said
\nPertamina had reduced its employees from 46,000 to 30,000 in the
\npast two years.<\/p>\n
\"We will conduct further evaluations whether or not we need to
\nreduce more employees,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Rumors on the promotion of Soegianto to the company's top
\nposition had been spreading for the past two months, with the
\nexpire of Faisal Abda'oe's second term.<\/p>\n
Soegianto, who began his career with Pertamina in 1960,
\nreplaced Faisal as finance director in 1988 when the latter was
\nsworn-in as the company's president. Faisal was Pertamina's
\nsecond-longest serving president after Ibnu Sutowo.<\/p>\n
At yesterday's inauguration ceremony, Minister of Mines and
\nEnergy I.B Sudjana also swore in six directors -- Priyambodo
\nMulyosudirdjo as director of exploration and production, Samto
\nUtomo as director of exploitation, Hadi Nugroho as director of
\nsupply and local marketing, Ilham Syarif as director of shipping
\nand communications, Hadi Sudibyo as director of finance and Hadi
\nDaryono as director of general affairs.<\/p>\n
Sudjana, in his speech, expressed hope that Pertamina would be
\nable to cope with the world's economic recession which had caused
\nIndonesia's own economic crisis.<\/p>\n
\"In facing this situation, we should not be pessimistic and
\nconsider the problem very difficult to solve. We have to take
\nevery opportunity in making strategic moves for the future,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He also called on Pertamina's new board of directors to keep
\ninvestment in the oil and gas sector attractive to investors to
\nboost the country's oil and gas production.<\/p>\n
He urged Pertamina to increase the production of its
\nrefineries by cooperating with the private sector.<\/p>\n
He also urged the company to enhance its performance through
