Pertamina, PLN to jointly develop power plants<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State oil and gas company Pertamina and a
\nsubsidiary of state electricity company PLN, PT PLN Pembangkit
\nJava Bali I (PJB I), have signed an agreement to jointly develop
\ngeothermal power plants throughout Indonesia, Pertamina
\nannounced.<\/p>\n
Pertamina spokesman Toto Soeparto said under the agreement,
\nboth companies would cooperate in the design, construction,
\ntesting, operation and maintenance of the geothermal power
\nplants.<\/p>\n
\"The agreement will increase the synergy between the two
\ncompanies in the form of a joint venture,\" Toto said in a media
\nstatement late on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
Signing the agreement for Pertamina was director for
\nexploration and production Gatot K Wiroyudo, while representing
\nPJB I was director for development and trade Herman Darnel.<\/p>\n
The two companies will also work together in the fields of
\nexploration and exploitation of geothermal resources, and jointly
\nstudy the upstream and downstream feasibility of the energy
\nresource.<\/p>\n
He said Pertamina had good experience in the development of
\ngeothermal fields, while PJB I was experienced in building and
\noperating geothermal power plants.<\/p>\n
Toto said the present cooperation between the two companies
\ninvolved the operation of geothermal power plant Kamojang units
\nI, II and III, which have a combined capacity of 140 megawatts
\n(MW).<\/p>\n
\"The current cooperation between the two companies in
\noperating the Kamojang geothermal power plant will show the
\nsynergy between them and mutually benefit both companies,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Future projects could include the development of the Kamojang
\nunit IV with a 60MW capacity; the Sibayak unit I with a 20MW
\ncapacity; the Lahendong unit II with a 40 MW capacity; and the
\nUlubelu unit I, which has a 60MW capacity.<\/p>\n
Indonesia's potential geothermal resources could provide up to
\n19,000 MW of the country's power needs, however, at present only
\n250 MW is being used.<\/p>\n
Toto said Pertamina was committed to further developing its
\ngeothermal non-core business unit, so that the unit could grow
\ninto a solid strategic business unit of the company.<\/p>\n
The government granted Pertamina monopoly rights over the
\nexploitation of geothermal resources in the early 1980s through
\nPresidential Decree No. 22\/1981.<\/p>\n
The government amended the decree 10 years later with
\nPresidential Decree No. 45\/1991, which allowed Pertamina and its
\ncontractors to explore and exploit geothermal resources, generate
\nelectricity using geothermal steam and to sell the power to PLN.<\/p>\n
The latest decree, Presidential Decree No. 76\/2000, lifts the
\nmonopoly and transfers the management and licensing rights of
\ngeothermal resources to the regions. (bkm)<\/p>",
