        "content": "<p>Pertamina New &amp; Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE) and the Ministry\nof Cooperatives (Kemenkop) are optimising the solar power plant (PLTS)\nbuilt on Sembur Island, Batam, as part of the development of the\nRed-and-White Village\/Sub-district Cooperative (KDMP) solar power\nprogramme.<\/p>\n<p>Pertamina NRE President Director John Anis said in a statement in\nJakarta on Tuesday that the plant has a capacity of 1 MWp with 1 MWh of\nbattery support and is expected to become part of the community\u2019s\neconomic activity and development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor us, energy is not only about generating electricity. What is\nmore important is how that electricity can provide real benefits to the\ncommunity and support their activities. It is hoped that the continuous\navailability of electricity can help improve the standard of living of\nthe people of Sembur Island,\u201d John said.<\/p>\n<p>The Sembur Island solar power plant was developed because the area\npreviously still relied on diesel generators that placed a considerable\nburden on the local economy.<\/p>\n<p>The project is directed at supporting the needs of around 200\nhouseholds as well as community economic activities through\ncooperatives, including through the construction of an ice factory with\na capacity of 4 tonnes per day and a cold storage warehouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith the availability of facilities such as cold storage and ice\nmakers, fishing communities can better maintain the quality of their\ncatch and develop their fish businesses,\u201d John said.<\/p>\n<p>During the celebration of the 81st Anniversary of Indonesian\nIndependence, for the first time the community held a flag ceremony\nusing electricity from the solar power plant.<\/p>\n<p>John said this was a small illustration of the use of energy now\navailable on the island.<\/p>\n<p>From the sound system that played Indonesia Raya to the series of\nceremonies carried out by the students, solar energy became part of the\nindependence celebration of the people of Sembur Island.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we hope is not only that the electricity comes on, but that the\ncommunity can carry out more activities and develop their businesses. If\nthe electricity can also be used for activities such as today\u2019s\nceremony, that is certainly something we are proud of,\u201d John Anis\nsaid.<\/p>",
